Ooh, la,la! This most precious pique baby dress was found at the Paris flea market. The French people have a way of bringing out the beauty of an object, highlighting it with simplicity of design. This darling high yoke creation is styled with puffed sleeves, which are casually bound with a bias binding. Peter Pan collars which bear no embellishment whatsoever but shout perfection, and a machine stitched hem. What is extraordinary about the dress is the plain inlaid border of fabric, embroidered with the most simplistic embroidery design imaginable, hemmed together with its facing in a scalloped seam. The scalloped flange is also used at the lower edge of the bodice and a tiny piped edging punctuates the otherwise embellished creation. On the back, a simple inlaid placket is pronounced by the addition of 8 mother-or-pearl buttons, each placed only a half-inch apart. Exquisite!
During this lesson, we will create the beautiful scalloped flange for the striking creation while learning basic Broderie Anglaise embroidery techniques. In keeping with the simple lines, padded satin stitch leaves, stem stitch stems and perfectly round eyelets make up the basis of the classic design. Working with imported pique, students will learn the proper method of tying on, proper foundation choice, to accurately pad, and tricks to making your satin stitch perfect every time. You will also learn the fool-proof method of making a beautiful stem stitch, and how to make your eyelets so fine, they look machine made. The extensively illustrated handout provides detailed instructions for construction the garment after class ends and an embroidery primer encourages completion of the project.
