In the early middle Ages, in Western Europe, embroidery with metal threads was used exclusively to adorn clothing and furnishings for the nobility and the church. By the time of Queen Elizabeth I, portraits from the period illustrate how lavishly metal thread embroidery was used to embellish and ornament the clothing. Later real metal threads garnished military dress uniforms and civic regalia and still do today.

This gorgeous project features a sparkling golden posey, lavishly embroidered in golden metal threads. Working with Japanese gold, bullions, bright check, and pearl purl, this project is the perfect Gold Work project for beginners and intermediate embroiderers. Shapes are padded with felt and cotton string, providing an excellent foundation for this dimensional embroidery medium. Techniques include couching, and threaded embroidery techniques using the finest metal threads.

Wendy has studied Gold Work at the Royal School of Needlework and wishes to share her knowledge of this intriguing art with you. This project, once completed, is suitable for framing or mounting.
