This pattern features one of my favorite techniques: organdy inset Madeira Appliqué. This technique differs from Appliqué in the sense that the steps for applying the inset are the reverse of appliqué. A shaped opening is cut out of the base fabric and a replacement fabric of another type is attached with traditional Madeira shaping and hemming techniques. The effect is beautifully enchanting and elegant, and working it is intriguing and interesting. Working with the base fabric (Swiss batiste), the shape consists of a swirling bow and streamer motif, which is carefully cut away with the raw edges turned under. The applied fabric (organdy), is applied to the wrong side and the edges of the shape are turned under. This provides a hem on both edges, which can be stitched in place via Point de Paris stitch. Adding even more interest is a beautiful shadow stitched rosebuds, which not only provide interest to the design, but color as well. The leaves are stitched in fern stitch. The little dress is of the apron style, slightly a-line in shape, and finished off with sweet puffed sleeves. The Peter Pan collar is edged in contrasting pink piping and buttons on back. A lovely, sweet project I know you will love making and two terrific techniques to add to your stitching repertoire.
