This is a special gown, which is not overly ornate, but is fancy by virtue of its length and styling. The fact that it is constructed in white handkerchief linen lends itself to the choice of embroidery: Whitework. This gorgeous form of embroidery consists of glorious padded satin stitch, shadow work, trailing stitch, and gads of eyelets. Oodles of tucks handsomely decorate the yoke, hemline, and cuffs of the Edwardian styled gown. Long sleeves add quaintness to the silhouette of the creation and wide lace insertion forms the v-shaped boundary of the ornate embroidery. Very wide lace edging adorns the hemline and is attached to the dress with entredeux. A glorious style!
Techniques include attaching lace to fabric with the Point de Paris stitch by machine, and many other techniques that duplicte hand techniques. After years of study, Wendy is more than willing to share with you the technique of traditional Whitework embroidery and how to turn simple white linen cloth into a spectacular heirloom-quality christening gown.
